The poster and postcards were printed for the C.C. Stern Type Foundry’s poetry broadside open house and release event, held in Clatskanie, Oregon in autumn 2023. Each word of the wood type in the background was printed with a 2 color “split fountain”, the metal type is overprinted with a dark blue ink.

Type is gothic wood type (originally from Stern & Faye Printers), hand-set metal Tower, Linotype Gothic No. 13.

This cocktail is one that we concocted during the height of the Coronovirus Pandemic, designed to be enjoyed while reading poetry aloud around an early summer backyard fire. The coasters with this recipe were created for the Spring 2023 NW Letterpress Network group exchange in a small edition on the tabletop Craftsman press.

Hand set in 30pt. Univers Condensed, with 48 pt. ornaments. The “Poetry Fire” type is from a collection we procured in the late 1990’s and is still unidentified, so if you know what it is please enlighten me.

This print features Lawson Fusao Inada’s poem “Nightsong in Asian America.” It is the second broadside released as part of the C.C. Stern Type Foundry’s Pacific Northwest Poets Laureate Project, printed in an edition of 50.

The broadside is set in Ludlow Garamond, which was cast by Jeff Shay and Connie Blauwkamp in 2022. It is illustrated with a reduction linoleum cut by Joseph Green. Printed in three colors.

This poster was designed and printed to promote the revival of the Raymond Carver Writing Festival, held in Carver’s birthplace of Clatskanie, OR (also the new home of our print shop and the C.C. Stern Type Foundry). Raymond Carver is often credited with revising the short story form in America, with a focus on writing about working class folks. It’s been a long time since I tried to print a straight-up show poster, if any writer deserves one it’s Raymond Carver. 


Poster designed and printed in collaboration with Brian Scott Bagdonas. Hand-set wood type and metal type, machine composition for smaller text. Linotype 14 point Spartan Medium and Stymie Condensed cast at the new C.C. Stern Type Foundry. Color tint printed from a litho blanket. Letterpress printed on Tango C1S in four colors.

Poem by Wendell Berry. Created for a NW Letterpress Network group exchange in the winter of 2022, in the midst of the Pacific Northwest rainy season.

Hand set in 6 and 10 point Centaur, printed with PMS 8184 metallic over a custom transparent silver metallic ink. Paper is from a stash of long-discontinued Neenah Blue Moon 120#C.

These coasters were printed as thank you gifts for C.C. Stern Type Foundry volunteers that assisted with packing and moving the foundry from Portland, OR to Clatskanie, OR in 2022.

Type is hand-set Stymie Black Condensed, Shaded, Franklin Gothic Condensed, and Egyptian Condensed with metal manicules of varying styles.

Created for a NW Letterpress Network group exchange in the autumn of 2022, the first official print made in our new shop in Clatskanie, Oregon. After years in storage, the type cases were all available to me and in a long rainy day I was able to set and print a small edition on the tabletop Craftsman press.

Hand set in 6 and 14 point Gill Light, printed in PMS 877 silver metallic ink. Moon is printed from a metal ornament with a pink metallic tint ink. Paper is 24pt. Neenah Packaging Board.

Created for a NW Letterpress Network group exchange in the autumn of 2021, as an expression of delight in learning about Eudemonology from a podcast. Eudaimonia has been defined as a life well-lived, or human flourishing. As the balance of the days moved towards darkness, I was searching for ways to flourish in the spirit of mutual aid. Color choice was influenced by the wondrous light of the aurora borealis.

Hand set in Ultra Bodoni, two color background relief printed as a split fountain using a litho blanket for the image block.

This print was produced for Celebrating All Types, an exchange portfolio orchestrated by Partners in Print for the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum’s 2021 Wayzgoose. Participants were asked to consider inclusivity and civic engagement as themes, and to use wood type for at least part of their print.

This quote from Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book Braiding Sweetgrass is from the chapter titled Maple Nation. Hand set wood type and metal type, printed in multiple runs with split fountain color treatment.

Editioned for the College Book Arts Association regional exchange in winter 2020-2021. The theme was environment/landscape/land acknowledgement, taking focus on the region we currently inhabit. I was influenced by the powerful concept of reciprocity as it relates to all life, with the Western redcedar (or “Tree of Life”) at the center.

Text is hand set in 30pt. Melior, designed by Hermann Zapf and cast by Stempel Foundry (Germany). Image is relief printed in three colors, including branches from a redcedar collected on a winter walk in the neighborhood. Printed on Classic Crest Eggshell 100#C.

A short poem by W.S. Merwin that felt appropriate to mark the past year, with all it’s various absences. Sent to friends and family.

Text is hand set in Freehand, a metal typeface designed by Morris Benton in 1917 and released by American Type Founders. Printed in one color on Via Warm White 100#C. Sewn with inherited embroidery thread, various colors.

Created for a NW Letterpress Network group exchange in summer of 2020, amidst the Coronavirus Pandemic and the uprising of the next wave of the Civil Rights Movement. This quote about the compassion and strength of community, written by Coretta Scott King, seemed especially poignant.

Hand set in 36pt. ATF Tower and 18pt. Monotype ornaments cast at the C.C. Stern Type Foundry. Printed in two colors on G.S. Smith Colorplan Citrus in 130#C.

This keepsake print was made in collaboration with Brian Scott Bagdonas for the the launch of Marfa Community Print in 2020. Board members were asked to contribute a print that expressed the qualities that make Marfa, Texas a special place to create art in community.

Linotype 14 point Intertype Bodoni Book 961 cast at the C.C. Stern Type Foundry. Color tints printed from litho blankets. Letterpress printed on Via Warm White in four colors.

This print was a collaboration with Brian Scott Bagdonas, created late at night at Stumptown Printers. Linotype cast type (14 pt Electra and 6pt Spartan heavy), Monotype and Linotype ornamental material. The sky and plant shapes were pressure printed relief using hand cut material.

Marfa Myths is a multi-day art and music festival held each spring in Marfa, TX. It was founded in 2014 by nonprofit contemporary arts foundation Ballroom Marfa and Brooklyn-based music label Mexican Summer.

The C.C. Stern Type Foundry issues new cards annually to supporters of the museum. Each guild card is printed in a small edition.

Type is hand-set 12pt. and 18pt. Centaur, designed by Bruce Rogers. The Monotype caster and keyboard ornaments were purchased from Stichting Lettergieten 1983, in Westzaan, The Netherlands. The backside pattern was built from Monotype ornaments cast at the C.C. Stern Type Foundry, the number five is Franklin Gothic Condensed.

This announcement card was collaboratively created at Stumptown Printers for an exhibit of letterpress work at 23 Sandy Gallery in January of 2016.

The front side is hand-set Othello and Monotype ornaments cast at the C.C. Stern Type Foundry. The backside is Linotype composition, set in Melior on a Linotype 31 by Brian Bagdonas at Stumptown Printers.

This haiku card utilizes ornaments cast at the C.C. Stern Type Foundry, once again playing with pattern and alignment. Designed using two metallic inks just slightly different in shade, so the effect is a subtle color shift that recalls the delights of a snowy sky.

Created for a winter ephemera exchange, printed in two colors. Ornaments are 18pt. Monotype 26, type is hand set Monotype Caslon.

This trilogy of tiny prints uses 12pt. American Type Founders Alpha-Blox, both Linear and Reverse. I used the characters to create patterns representative of the interior of an active beehive: eggs, larvae, pollen and honey stores, and the Supersedure cell that lets you know a new queen is on the way.

This short ghost story was written by Colin Meloy and illustrated by Carson Ellis.

Originally intended to be Monotype composed, the end version was instead printed in two colors from magnesium relief plates in a limited edition. Digitally typeset in Eric Gill's Perpetua type face. Hand sewn into paper covers with the assistance of Jules Remedios Faye. Signed and lettered editions included a 4" x 6" two color print.

Funded in part by Literary Arts Fellowships to Publishers.

"A Word in Print" was created for the Printed Word exhibit in conjunction with the performance of Josh Kornbluth's Ben Franklin Unplugged at Portland Center Stage. The text is inspired by the aphorisms published by Franklin in the Poor Richard's Almanack.

Typefaces are foundry Franklin Gothic, Goudy Bold, Cheltenham Italic. Decorative material is Linotype border material and rule, ATF ornaments.

Designed to serve as gift tags for the urban backyard farmer, these were used to adorn jars of honey, bundles of produce, or a carton of freshly laid eggs.

Type is hand-set foundry Litho Roman. "Goodness" is set with ATF ornaments, the other illustrations of a honey extractor and chicken were found randomly in a collection of cuts.

Commissioned by the author, Carolyn Winch, this accordion-style book features seasonal haiku inspired by the the desert around Bend, Oregon. Illustrations are from original ink drawings by Shuko Kawase.

Type is digitally set in Frutiger and Rusticana, letterpress printed from magnesium relief plates. Printed in six colors and hand-bound into cloth covers with a paper wrap.

A short story written by Jeff Grimes, with cover illustration by Kristin Bye.

The cover is letterpress printed with hand-set Monotype Alternate Gothic, and the original ink illustration is printed from a magnesium relief plate. Interior pages are litho offset, printed at Stumptown Printers from metal plates. The booklet is hand sewn with a pamphlet stitch.

This two-color broadside features an excerpt from the Marge Piercy poem, For strong women. Printed by permission for a Northwest printers broadside exchange, and reread many times for assurance in the past decade.

Hand-set in various sizes of ATF foundry Litho Roman originally from Dempsey and Campbell Printing Company, justified late at night. Colophon is Spartan, the "A" is beat up old wood type.
